Mental Health Services: an Integral Part of our Drug Rehab Program

Mental health counseling is an important part of our drug and alcohol treatment program since there is a high prevalence of clients having both addiction and mental illness (also known as dual diagnosis). Mental health counseling covers many disorders including mood disorders (depression, bi-polar), anxiety disorders (panic, social phobias, obsessive-compulsive, post traumatic stress disorder), sexual disorders, somatoform disorders, sleep disorders, eating disorder, impulse control disorders, schizophrenia, cognitive disorders (delirium, dementia) and personality disorders.

Sunshine Coast Health Center has a skilled mental health team that includes a Psychiatrist and a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. For more information on our staff qualifications visit the Meet our Staff section.

As part of our mental health program, Sunshine Coast provides ongoing assessment which involves diagnosing the existence of mental health issues. Identifying obstacles that have kept clients stuck in active addiction takes time but greatly improves the odds of clients completing treatment and maintaining sobriety. For more information on assessment services offered at Sunshine Coast Health Center visit the Assessment Services section.

Addiction Counseling: The Heart of our Drug Rehabilitation Program

Sunshine Coast Health Center provides a combination of both group and individual counseling. Counselors are assigned a maximum of 8 clients which provides each client a minimum of one hour of individual counseling per week.

By combining Meaning-Centered therapy, Twelve Step Facilitation therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and relationship counseling, our drug rehabilitation program offers an array of individualized treatment options based on the recommendations of counseling staff and needs identified by the client. These distinct modes of addiction therapy are integrated into the drug and alcohol rehabilitation program at Sunshine Coast Health Center.

For more information on addiction counseling services at Sunshine Coast refer to the Addiction Counseling section.

Alcohol & Drug Detox Services: A Necessary First Step

While drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs can exist without having detox services, clients soon come to appreciate the benefits of having an onsite medically-supervised detoxification unit which include:

  1. prompt admission (clients don’t require a period of “clean time” before entering treatment)
  2. a transitional period during which time clients can adjust to their new environment before starting intensive group and individual counselling.

While in detox, many of our clients learn that they have medical conditions brought on by years of neglect or risky behaviour. While the diagnosis of disease is never easy, medical staff is here to provide comfort and education so that clients can begin to make positive changes in lifestyle to help manage their condition.

Life after Drug Rehabilitation Treatment: Alumni Programs & Services

Addiction recovery is the stage that follows alcohol and drug rehabilitation and is sometimes referred to as post-treatment, aftercare, or continuing care. At Sunshine Coast Health Center, we realize that life after treatment is more than just abstaining from drugs and alcohol. In fact, addiction recovery also means having satisfying relationships and a lifestyle that allows for personal and professional growth. That is why we begin to develop the tools for addiction recovery while you are in treatment.

Examples include learning to have fun socially without the use of drugs or alcohol (off-site recreation), finding other ways to relieve stress (massage therapy, relaxation therapy, etc.), and ways to get “natural highs” (working out at our fitness center). Going to off-site AA and NA meetings while still residing in our drug rehab also helps clients experience self-help meetings first-hand. Sunshine Coast believes that off-site meetings are a critical first step in encouraging clients to make new, supportive friendships as an alternative to isolation or “friends” that feel threatened by recovery.

Addiction recovery, long neglected by the addiction treatment community, is only now starting to develop innovative, effective ways to develop a rewarding sobriety for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Alumni of the Sunshine Coast Health Center program are provided complimentary, weekly online support lessons for those with Internet access.

For more information on the services Sunshine Coast provides alumni visit the Alumni Programs & Services section.

Therapy for the Mind, Body, and Spirit: Fostering Lifestyle Changes during Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation

While being clean and sober is a necessary first step, Sunshine Coast Health Center understands that abstinence from drugs and alcohol is only the beginning of life after treatment. That is why we encourage clients to make lifestyle changes during their stay in the Primary Program.

For example, Sunshine Coast Health Center provides on-site therapies designed to help clients feel better physically, emotionally and spiritually. These therapies include massage, art expression, and relaxation therapy.

By experiencing these affordable and widely-available complementary therapies while still in our drug rehab program, we believe that clients develop additional lifestyle skills that will enhance their odds of successful addiction recovery when they return to their home communities.

In addition, clients can work out with weights or use our cardio equipment in our fully-equipped fitness center, go for daily-scheduled noon-hour walks around the campus, and participate in off-site recreation such as trips to the beach, trails or Powell River amenities such as the recreation complex or bowling.

For more information visit the Therapy for the Mind, Body, and Spirit section.

A TYPICAL CLIENT

Typically, Sunshine Coast Health Center clients are men who are:

• addicted to alcohol or cocaine ¹ as their drug of choice
• experiencing strife with their partner as a result of their addiction
• finding themselves ill-equipped to provide financial or emotional support for their families
• missing work, in danger of losing their jobs, or have ended a successful career due to their addiction
• considering treatment again after previous treatment episodes

Our addiction counseling staff come from a variety of backgrounds and personal experiences; clients need not worry about being treated like second-class citizens judged by their drug of choice.

(1) Note: Sunshine Coast Health Center treats all mood-altering substances including opiates. Some restrictions may apply.

The Power of an All-male Peer Group in Drug Rehab

Apart from families and partners, your relationship with your peers during your stay in drug rehab is an important step in your recovery. We address the tendency of those with drug and alcohol addictions to isolate and turn to mood-altering drugs when coping with life’s challenges. By sharing their experiences and supporting others who are struggling with similar issues, clients can experience strength in numbers.

Unfortunately, sharing intimate thoughts and living together for an extended period can also be the catalyst for romance in a co-ed environment. Men and women in early recovery are particularly vulnerable to jumping into unhealthy relationships. This can have a devastating impact on marriages and have a “triangulating” effect in the peer group where jealousy and rivalries can start. Our drug rehab program is intentionally male-only so that clients can experience the power of the peer group in a safe environment.

THE FAMILY & COUPLES PROGRAM: Recognizing the Important Role of Significant Others in Successful Drug Rehabilitation Outcomes

“Twenty-five years ago families were by and large ignored by alcoholism clinicians … one is now hard pressed to find a credible alcoholism rehabilitation program that does not at least give lip service to the importance of including family members in the treatment plan.”

~ P. Steinglass, 1994 ¹

Building a network of people supporting a client’s efforts to remain clean and sober is critical to successful rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol. At Sunshine Coast Health Center, we know that sending clients back to the same family dynamic after completion of drug rehabilitation treatment typically leads to continued problems of daily functioning as well as the greater likelihood of relapse.

Every three weeks family members are invited to participate in the Family & Couples Program. Up to three family members ² can participate in one session at no charge except for the cost of transportation and accommodation.

Spouses and partners are invited to participate in Day 4 of the Family Program which is designed exclusively for couples counseling. The Couples Program allows partners of clients in the Primary Program to work with their partner and other couples separate from parents and children. The cost of the Couples Program is included in the Primary Program fee.

For more information see the Family & Couples Programs & Services section.

Regardless of whether you have a family member in our Primary Program, if you are a family member, friend, or partner of someone with an addiction we encourage you to visit the Self-Help section for additional information.
