Outpatient Alcohol & Drug Services - Victoria

For adults with addiction issues contact Adult Addiction Community Treatment Services at the Victoria Clinic located on the 2nd floor of 1250 Quadra Street, phone (250) 727-3544. Services are also available to substance-affected adult family members. Requires an appointment so please call ahead.

For adults with addiction issues there is also Pacific Centre Family Services located at 103-2849 Peatt Road, phone (250) 478-8357. Pacific Centre provides individual therapy only (no group) and requires an appointment so call ahead.

For seniors 55 and older with alcohol or prescription drug issues contact Victoria Innovative Seniors’ Treatment Approach (VISTA) located at 2828 Nanaimo Street, phone (250) 953-3966. These problems may occur along with late-onset mental health problems. VISTA provides outreach services to seniors as well as consultative services, educational workshops and group counselling.

For youth (12 to 19) with addiction or concurrent mental health/addiction issues contact Discovery Youth & Family Addiction Services located at the Esquimalt Health Unit, 530 Fraser Street, 2nd floor, phone (250) 721-2669. This program also provides support for substance-affected youth and families. Hours are 8:30 to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday (closed noon hour).

Note: offers a non-medical detox in a home setting for youth 13 to 19 years of age that have addiction or concurrent mental health/addiction issues. The Youth Withdrawal Management Program is divided into two tiers. Tier I acute detox is 7 -10 days of 24 hour supervised care. Tier 2 detox provides youth with an opportunity to stay an additional 20 days in the care home depending on the youth’s recovery needs and transition plans. Youth in the Withdrawal Management Program are assigned a Youth and Family Support Worker. Referrals to the Youth Withdrawal Management Program are made to the Detox Intake Worker.

Acronyms and Definitions

AA – Alcoholics Anonymous (main site is www.aa.org)

Alano Clubs - a place for recovering people to meet and socialize in a clean and sober environment before and after 12 step meetings.

Al-Anon / Alateen– a twelve-step program of recovery for friends and family members of individuals who misuse or are addicted to alcohol. Al-Anon is for adults within the program whereas Alateen is for youth (ages 12 to 20).

CA – Cocaine Anonymous (main site is www.ca.org)

Intergroup – centralized offices (typically AA) that operate independently of the worldwide service structure. Intergroups are established to carry out certain functions (i.e. maintaining lists of meetings) that are best handled by a centralized office within a geographic region. Intergroups are maintained, supervised, and supported by Intergroup members. There are more than 600 Intergroup offices functioning through the world performing AA services.

LifeRing – a secular mutual support group that broke away from another secular mutual support group, SOS, in 1999. LifeRing is abstinence-based. For more information visit the LifeRing Canada website or LifeRing.org .

Nar-Anon - a twelve-step program of recovery for friends and family members of individuals who misuse or are addicted to drugs.

SMART Recovery® - is a secular mutual support group that “has a scientific foundation, not a spiritual one.” SMART Recovery® views addictive behavior as a maladaptive habit, rather than as a disease.

Youth Support Recovery (Sober Living) - Victoria

Note: a support recovery home for male youth. Clients can stay anywhere from 30 days to 1 year depending on needs. Youth with crystal meth issues will have placement priority. Services are provided on a full continuum of care basis, incorporating a bio-psycho-social-spiritual therapeutic approach and 12 Step philosophy. Aftercare includes advocacy, referral, and family support. Graduates of the program have the opportunity to become peer mentors to incoming youth and are provided with long term, ongoing support. For fitness, scheduled activities are provided daily. This transition housing is funded by BC through the Provincial Homelessness Initiative and the Premier’s Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions; VIHA; and The Salvation Army. Hours are 10 am to 7 pm but intakes are any time. Self referrals are accepted.

Youth Supportive Recovery Care Home Program

Note: For youth with addictions or concurrent mental health/addictions. This program offers a safe, supportive home for youth and a Youth Support Worker to provide support for both the care home and the youth. Female or male youth are placed in one of four different homes on an individual basis. For detox, one home is designated for social detox. Referrals are made to the Care Home Program’s Intake Coordinator by the individual’s alcohol and drug counsellor. Please note that the referring alcohol and drug counsellor is expected to remain active in the youth’s case management and provide ongoing drug and alcohol counselling.
